MEANING & HISTORY
What does Aleksey mean?
Aleksey is a Russian form of Alexius, from Greek Alexios and Alexis. The older Greek formation concerns defending or helping.
It is related in vocabulary to Alexander but is not simply the same compound shortened into Russian. Orthodox saints and a Russian tsar bore this form, giving it a specific historical transmission. Aleksey’s spelling represents a Latin-letter rendering of the Russian name rather than a separate English root.
