MEANING & HISTORY
What does Allison mean?
Allison has more than one established naming route. As a feminine given name it is a spelling of Alison, the familiar form belonging to the Alice family.
As a surname-derived given name it can reflect other medieval personal names, including Alan or Alexander. The visible ending -son therefore does not justify reading every Allison simply as “son of Alice.” These overlapping histories explain why the same spelling appears in different gender and family contexts.
For a particular bearer, the intended long-name connection matters more than a universal translation. Keep Allison and Alison separate as exact forms while explaining their relationship.
