MEANING & HISTORY
What does Astrid mean?
Astrid is the modern Scandinavian form of Old Norse Ástríðr. The older compound combines a god element with an element meaning beautiful or beloved.
This provides a documented two-part name rather than a literal word meaning star. The resemblance between Astrid and English astronomy vocabulary is coincidental to that formation. Scandinavian historical bearers and the writer Astrid Lindgren are later associations of an inherited Norse personal name.
