MEANING & HISTORY
What does Avelino mean?
Avelino is used in honour of Saint Andrea Avellino, whose surname appears with one l in Spanish and Portuguese. The surname comes from the Italian town Avellino, continuing Latin Abellinum.
This is a specific geographical and devotional formation, not a securely translated word for hazelnut. The older place name’s root is a separate question. Avelino can therefore be explained meaningfully through the saint’s surname without inventing a literal meaning for every stage.
