MEANING & HISTORY

What does Chantal mean?

Chantal comes from a French surname derived from a place name meaning stony. Its first-name use originally honoured Saint Jeanne-Françoise de Chantal, linking a surname with a devotional naming practice.

The later resemblance to French chant, song, created an attractive association but is not the original root. Chantal therefore has a specific place-and-saint formation rather than being simply a French translation of singing or a compound meaning beautiful song.
