MEANING & HISTORY
What does Claudius mean?
Claudius is a Roman family name later used as a given name. The proposed derivation from Latin claudus, lame, remains qualified rather than certain.
The older family tradition includes a Sabine background, which is different from treating the Latin adjective as an unquestionable original explanation. The English dictionary documents the Latin borrowing and its relationship to Claude. Claudius therefore has a specific historical formation without turning an uncertain root into a personal label or making an imperial bearer the origin of every modern use.
