MEANING & HISTORY
What does Clovis mean?
Clovis comes through French from the Frankish name conventionally reconstructed as Hlodowig. Its Germanic elements concern fame and battle, and the same historical name developed into Louis and Ludwig in other language traditions.
Clovis therefore belongs to that family even though its modern appearance is quite different. The initial letters should not be interpreted as an independent English word or split into invented modern components.
