MEANING & HISTORY
What does Cyrus mean?
Cyrus is the Latin form of Greek Kyros, representing Old Persian Kuruš. Cyrus the Great gave the name a lasting royal and biblical association.
The older name’s ultimate meaning is debated: young and other Iranian explanations have been proposed, as has an Elamite origin. The Greek word kyrios, lord, is a later association, not a demonstrated literal translation of Kuruš.
