MEANING & HISTORY

What does Dante mean?

Dante began as a medieval short form of Italian Durante. Durante continues Late Latin Durans, meaning enduring.

The famous poet Dante Alighieri made this particular form internationally recognizable, but the word ancestry belongs to the longer name. Dante is consequently a name of contraction rather than a newly invented Italian noun. Its association with the Divine Comedy is a literary connection, not a separate literal meaning of the syllables.
