MEANING & HISTORY

What does Demetrio mean?

Demetrio is the Italian and Spanish form of Demetrius, Latinized from Greek Demetrios. The Greek name is derived from Demeter, the goddess associated with agriculture.

This makes the personal name deity-derived rather than a direct word meaning earth mother. The latter phrase is itself a proposed analysis of Demeter, one stage further back. Kings and Christian saints bore Demetrius, providing several historical routes by which the family survived beyond classical religion.
