MEANING & HISTORY
What does Edward mean?
Edward is an Old English compound of ead, wealth or good fortune, and weard, guard or guardian. Rich guard is a close traditional rendering of those elements.
Unlike many Old English personal names, it remained in use after the Norman Conquest, helped by the reputation of Edward the Confessor. The root concerns guarding and prosperity; it is not derived from the unrelated modern English word award.
