MEANING & HISTORY
What does Elmo mean?
Elmo can be an Italian contracted form of Erasmo, equivalent to Erasmus. The Greek source is associated with being beloved or desirable.
Saint Elmo preserves this route in Christian and maritime tradition. A separate German use shortens Elmar, so not all uses share the same full history. Its resemblance to Elmer is also a source of later association rather than proof that the names are always identical.
