MEANING & HISTORY
What does Evelyn mean?
Evelyn developed through an English surname that continued the older personal name Aveline. Aveline belongs to a Germanic name family whose earliest element is not agreed upon.
This history differs from simply adding an ending to Eve: the resemblance to Eve influenced later associations, but does not prove a literal meaning of life for every Evelyn. The name was used for men as well as women before becoming predominantly feminine in many modern settings. Its specific surname-to-given-name route remains informative without choosing one speculative translation of the ancient root.

From Middle English forms of the Old French female name Aveline, diminutive of the Germanic root *avi-, of uncertain meaning, possibly “desired, wished for“ (compare Latin avēre, "to wish for") or aval “strength”. By folk etymology also misunderstood as a diminutive of the feminine given name Eve, q.v. Doublet of Eileen. Also compare Ava.
