MEANING & HISTORY
What does Fabian mean?
Fabian comes from the Roman cognomen Fabianus, a derivative of the family name Fabius. Fabius is linked with Latin faba, bean.
The immediate personal-name formation is therefore a Roman family-name derivative, with the plant word one stage further back. Saint Fabian, a third-century pope, is a major Christian association. Calling the name simply bean farmer would add an occupational meaning that the documented name structure does not establish.
