MEANING & HISTORY
What does Freddy mean?
Freddy is a diminutive of Frederick and other names sharing the Fred element. Frederick contains Germanic peace and ruler elements, but that complete compound belongs to the longer base.
Freddy’s ending marks a familiar personal form. A bearer named directly Freddy need not have Frederick as a registered name, and another longer Fred-name could supply a different history. The documented relationship is more useful than treating every short Fred form as one newly constructed phrase.
