MEANING & HISTORY
What does Harriet mean?
Harriet is an English adaptation of French Henriette, a feminine formation from Henri or Henry. The older Germanic compound joins home and ruler.
The dictionary supplies the immediate French route, and the medieval source independently checks Henry’s components. Harriet should therefore not be treated as a combination of Harry with an invented -et meaning. Its history is related to other Henry-family names, while the particular English form retains its own spelling and does not need to be replaced with Henrietta in personal records.
