MEANING & HISTORY
What does Hyacinth mean?
Hyacinth continues Greek Hyakinthos through Latin Hyacinthus. In Greek myth Hyakinthos is the youth associated with Apollo and a flower arising after his death.
The older name and plant word have an uncertain ultimate origin. The modern flower association is real, but it is not a secure translation into a separate phrase such as precious jewel or divine beauty.
