MEANING & HISTORY

What does Ildefonso mean?

Ildefonso is the Spanish continuation of a Germanic name preserved in medieval Latin as Ildephonsus and Hildephonsus. The usual analysis joins a battle element with one meaning ready or eager.

Saint Ildefonsus of Toledo, a seventh-century bishop, is an early historical bearer. Its resemblance to Alfonso reflects related Germanic naming material, but the two spellings should not simply be treated as interchangeable abbreviations.
