MEANING & HISTORY
What does Iñaki mean?
Iñaki is a Basque form corresponding to Ignatius and Spanish Ignacio. The Spanish dictionary documents that relationship, independently confirmed by the editorial name entry.
The older Ignatius family has an uncertain Etruscan source; its later spelling was associated with Latin fire. Fire should therefore be labeled as a later association rather than a secure original translation of Iñaki. The ñ is part of the name’s exact written form.
Its relationship to Ignacio does not make the two spellings interchangeable in someone’s personal records.
