MEANING & HISTORY

What does Jill mean?

Jill is a form of Gill used as a familiar name from Gillian, the medieval English continuation of Juliana. The dictionary supplies the full relationship rather than a modern derivation from the English word jill as an ordinary noun.

The older Juliana family belongs to Julius; youthful is not an independently certain literal root for Jill. Jill and Gill retain different written forms. Their historical connection is useful, but a person called Jill need not also have Gillian as another registered name.
