MEANING & HISTORY
What does Karen mean?
Karen developed as a Danish form of Katherine or Catherine and later entered English naming. Katherine’s deeper Greek origin is debated; its association with pure reflects a longstanding later interpretation.
Karen also has an independent Armenian and Iranian masculine name history with the same romanized spelling. The Danish Katherine formation explains the familiar English-language name without assigning modern slang associations to its bearers.
