MEANING & HISTORY
What does Louise mean?
Louise is the French feminine form of Louis. The older name family combines Germanic elements for fame and battle, giving the conventional gloss famous in battle.
Its French formation and later use in English and other languages are different stages of the same history. Louise is not simply an arbitrary spelling of Luisa: both are related feminine forms, but each reflects its language setting. The martial root is historical naming vocabulary, not a statement that a bearer is a soldier or has an aggressive character.
