MEANING & HISTORY
What does Lowell mean?
Lowell is a surname-derived given name. The surname continues a medieval diminutive made from Old French lou, wolf, with the ending el.
Little wolf is therefore the supported historical formation. The modern English words low and well do not supply its roots. The diminutive belongs to the older nickname and does not describe the current bearer’s size or temperament.
