MEANING & HISTORY

What does Mae mean?

Mae is an alternative spelling of May. May can be the name of the spring month, historically associated with the Roman goddess Maia, or a familiar form of Mary, Margaret, or Mabel.

Mae therefore need not have a single longer name behind it. The actress Mae West was born Mary, illustrating one route, but that example does not determine how another family selected the spelling.
