MEANING & HISTORY
What does Mary mean?
Mary is the usual English development of Maria, carried through Greek Mariam or Maria from Hebrew Miryam. That history is well documented even though Miryam’s oldest meaning is debated.
Proposed explanations involving bitterness, rebellion or a wished-for child are alternatives, not meanings to combine into a single flattering sentence. The biblical Miriam and Mary belong to the same historical family, while Maria and Marie represent other language forms. Choosing the subtitle “English form of Maria” preserves a real account of the name without pretending that one disputed ancient root has been settled.
