MEANING & HISTORY
What does Miriam mean?
Miriam represents Hebrew Miryam, the name of the biblical sister of Moses and Aaron. It is the older Hebrew family behind Mary and Maria, not an expanded version invented from those modern spellings.
Several analyses have been proposed for Miryam, including Hebrew roots connected with bitterness or rebellion and a possible Egyptian background. Those possibilities remain distinct; combining them would not produce a real translation. The biblical Hebrew form gives Miriam a precise historical identity while allowing the deeper linguistic debate to remain accurately described.

EnglishEtymology & source
From Hebrew מִרְיָם (Miryam), possibly from Aramaic מרים (Maryām, “bitter”), from a root מר (m-r) meaning "to be bitter". The meaning of this name which is the Old Testament equivalent of Mary has been debated for centuries. Some other explanations are mutiny / rebellion / disobedience from a root מרי (m-r-y).
A female given name from Hebrew.
