MEANING & HISTORY
What does Nash mean?
Nash comes from an English surname derived from Middle English atten ash, at the ash tree. The initial n preserves part of the older phrase after its words were compressed into a surname.
Its later use as a first name follows a surname-transfer pattern. The tree is the actual historical landmark, rather than a symbolic addition about strength. A modern Nash does not need a personal connection with a particular English tree or settlement.
