MEANING & HISTORY
What does Oliver mean?
Oliver developed from Old French Olivier. One explanation derives Olivier from Latin oliva, an olive tree; another sees a Germanic or Norse name behind the French form, later reshaped by the familiar olive word.
The medieval literary figure Olivier, companion of Roland, helped establish the name in European storytelling. Olive imagery is therefore a real association, but “peaceful” is a symbolic interpretation of the olive branch rather than the direct translation of Oliver. The subtitle preserves the known French formation without hiding the older alternatives.
