MEANING & HISTORY
What does Rowena mean?
Rowena is known from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s medieval account of Hengist’s daughter and later from Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. Those appearances give the name a concrete literary history even though its oldest lexical origin is not settled.
Proposed combinations involving fame and joy or spear and white remain unsupported possibilities. The literary formation is therefore the useful subtitle, rather than presenting one attractive but unproven compound as the name’s definite ancient meaning.

EnglishEtymology & source
From the name of the daughter of Hengist and wife of Vortigern in Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th century pseudohistorical Latin work Historia regum Britanniae. There have been attempts to connect it to some unattested Old English or Common Brittonic name, but without any real evidence. It was revived after Walter Scott used it in his novel Ivanhoe (1819). Some places are named after Lady Rowena in the novel.
A female given name from the Germanic languages.
