MEANING & HISTORY
What does Rufus mean?
Rufus is a Roman cognomen with a Latin red or red-haired sense. It began within a naming tradition that could use physical descriptions before becoming an inherited personal name.
Early Christian bearers helped transmit the form, including a Rufus mentioned in a Pauline letter. The historical colour description does not prove anything about a modern bearer’s appearance. Rufus remains a complete name rather than requiring a longer hidden form to supply its meaning.
