MEANING & HISTORY

What does Sandra mean?

Sandra is a short form of Alessandra, the Italian counterpart of Alexandra. The older Greek name belongs to the defending-men family represented by Alexander.

Sandra’s immediate formation is a shortening, not a separate Greek word for helper. English literary use, including George Meredith’s heroine Sandra Belloni, helped establish it independently. A modern Sandra does not need to have Alessandra on her documents for that historical relationship to remain part of the name’s ancestry.
