MEANING & HISTORY
What does Sergio mean?
Sergio continues the Roman family name Sergius through Spanish and Italian. Sergius was used in ancient Rome and later by Christian saints and church leaders, which helped preserve the name across languages.
Its ultimate root is often considered Etruscan; a connection with a Latin word for servant has also been proposed, but is not secure enough to make “servant” the sole translation of Sergio. The documented formation is the Sergius-to-Sergio relationship. Serge, Sergey and related names belong to the same broad family with different linguistic histories.
