MEANING & HISTORY
What does Simon mean?
Simon is widely associated with the Hebrew Simeon family through Greek and Latin biblical forms. The familiar hearing interpretation belongs to that Hebrew route.
The English dictionary also discusses a separate Greek name and older Germanic names that could converge in similar medieval spellings. Those histories caution against treating every Simon as having an identical origin. Cebuano documents connections through both English Simon and Spanish Simón.
A clear profile can explain the biblical interpretation while keeping alternate historical routes and exact accents visible.

EnglishEtymology & source
From Middle English Simon, Symond, Symounde, from Anglo-Norman Simon, Simond, Simund, a conflation of two unrelated names: one from Latin Simon, from Koine Greek Σίμων (Símōn), strictly from Ancient Greek—likely σῑμός (sīmós, “snub-nosed”)—but used for Biblical Hebrew שִׁמְעוֹן (šimʿōn), doublet of Simeon; the other from Old Norse Sigmundr or Old English Siġemund, both from Proto-Germanic *Sigimunduz (literally “Protector of victory”), whence also Sigmund and Siegmund.
A male given name from Hebrew.
