MEANING & HISTORY
What does Vanessa mean?
Jonathan Swift created Vanessa for Esther Vanhomrigh in his poem Cadenus and Vanessa. The formation takes Van from her surname and reshapes material associated with Esther into the ending.
This is an identifiable literary coinage, rather than an ancient word meaning butterfly. Vanessa was later adopted as a scientific name for a butterfly genus, which explains the modern butterfly association but reverses the direction if treated as the personal name’s original source. The naming story is a rare case where the creator and the person whose name supplied the elements are both known.
