MEANING & HISTORY

What does Yuri mean?

Yuri represents separate Russian and Japanese name histories. Russian Yuri is a form in the George family, ultimately connected with Greek georgos, farmer or earthworker.

Japanese Yuri can be written 百合, lily, but other kanji and readings also occur. The Cebuano dictionary records both a Russian masculine and a Japanese feminine name. Those entries do not establish which history belongs to an individual Philippine bearer.

The two meanings should remain alternatives rather than a synthetic phrase such as farmer’s lily.
