MEANING & HISTORY

What does Yves mean?

Yves is a medieval French form of Ivo. Ivo is usually analyzed as a short Germanic name containing the element iwa, yew, though a related Celtic origin has also been proposed.

The tree connection is therefore more grounded than an unsupported translation such as archer king. Several French and Breton saints bore forms of the name. Their history helped establish Yves as a conventional personal name apart from the ordinary vocabulary word for the tree.
