Meaning and formation
Aguinaldo means “gift” in Spanish, especially a gift at Christmas or Epiphany. The surname comes from the noun aguinaldo, which also passed into Tagalog as aginaldo. Emilio Aguinaldo bore this family name as the president of the First Philippine Republic. His full name, Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy, places Aguinaldo before the Spanish conjunction y and his maternal surname Famy after it. The surname also became a Philippine place name: the municipality of Aguinaldo in Ifugao was named in honour of Emilio Aguinaldo.
