Meaning and formation

Alcantara comes through Spanish Alcántara from Arabic al-qanṭara, “the bridge”. The Arabic element al- supplies “the”, while qanṭara supplies “bridge”. The surname was borrowed into Tagalog and Cebuano from the Spanish form. Spanish Alcántara has an accent on á, while Alcantara is commonly written without it in the Philippines. One bearer was Paulino Alcántara, a footballer born in Iloilo who played for FC Barcelona and represented both the Philippines and Spain. He also trained as a physician and practised medicine after his playing career.
