Origin and formation

Antonio is a Spanish surname formed from the personal name Antonio. That personal name is a Spanish and Italian continuation of Latin Antonius, the name of an ancient Roman family. The surname keeps the personal-name form without adding a patronymic ending. A Philippine bearer was the architect Pablo Sebero Antonio, born in 1901. He became known for modernist buildings in Manila, including the Far Eastern University campus. He was named a National Artist for Architecture in 1976, after his death the previous year.
