Origin and formation
Aquino refers to the town of Aquino in Italy. The place name is connected with Latin aqua, “water”; the Spanish surname can also honour Saint Thomas Aquinas, whose name refers to that town. The surname entered Tagalog through Spanish. In the Philippine family of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., Aquino was the paternal surname shared with his father Benigno Aquino Sr. Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco adopted Aquino through marriage to Ninoy. Their son Benigno Aquino III also bore Aquino, carrying the surname into a further generation.
