Origin and formation

Ayala is a Spanish form of Basque Aiala or Aiara. It is associated with a place name in the Basque Country; one explanation joins ai, “slope” or “hillside”, with alha, “pasture”. The surname passed through Spanish into Philippine use. In Philippine business history, the name is associated with the family of Domingo Róxas and Antonio de Ayala, partners in the enterprise established in 1834 that developed into Ayala Corporation. The corporate name preserves the surname as part of the history of that family business.
