Origin and formation
Balagtas is traditionally associated with Bagtas, the name of a legendary ruler of Namayan. The surname form has an additional la within the earlier name. Its best-known bearer, the poet Francisco Balagtas, was born in Bigaa, Bulacan, in 1788. He later used the surname Baltazar after the nineteenth-century surname reforms. Both names remain associated with the author of Florante at Laura. Bigaa was renamed Balagtas in his honour, and the poetic debate called balagtasan also takes its name from the poet’s earlier family surname.
