Meaning and formation
Bonifacio has the Latin sense “one with a good fate”, from Bonifatius. The surname entered Tagalog through Spanish Bonifacio, carrying the spelling of that personal name. Andrés Bonifacio bore the family surname of his father, Santiago Bonifacio; his mother was Catalina de Castro. His full name, Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro, places those two surnames on either side of y. Born in Tondo in 1863, he helped establish the Katipunan in 1892 and led the revolution against Spain in 1896. His sister Espiridiona also bore the Bonifacio surname.
