Meaning and formation
Cruz means “cross” in Spanish. The surname developed both as a religious name referring to the Christian cross and as a name connected with a cross at a place. The word comes from Latin crux. In the Philippines, Cruz was borrowed into Tagalog and Cebuano. Longer forms include de la Cruz, “of the cross”, written in Philippine use as Dela Cruz or Delacruz as well. These longer surnames retain additional words in their formation. Juan de la Cruz is also the name of a symbolic Filipino everyman.
