Origin and formation

Duterte is used as a surname in Cebuano and was borrowed into Tagalog. One Philippine family carrying it came to Davao from Cebu. Vicente Duterte, born in Danao, served as an acting mayor of that Cebu town before the family settled in Davao. He later became governor of the undivided province of Davao. His son Rodrigo Duterte was born in Maasin, Southern Leyte, and grew up in Davao. Rodrigo served as mayor of Davao City before becoming president of the Philippines in 2016, linking the family name with both the Visayas and Mindanao.
