Origin and formation

Enrile was already a family surname in Spain before its use by the Philippine political family. José Nicolás Enrile of Cádiz appears in a 1799 licence to travel to the Americas. In the Philippine family, Juan Ponce Enrile initially used his mother’s surname Furagganan. His father Alfonso Ponce Enrile later arranged a legal change to the paternal name. Juan’s son Jack also used Ponce Enrile, continuing that family form into another generation.
