Meaning and formation
Escudero comes from Spanish escudero, “squire” or “shield bearer”. It began as an occupational surname for an attendant who served a knight. The word continues medieval Latin scutarius, formed from scutum, “shield”. The surname thus preserves the name of a historical role rather than a personal given name. In the Philippines, bearers include Salvador Escudero III, a veterinarian and agriculture secretary, and his son Francis “Chiz” Escudero, a lawyer and senator. The family has longstanding public associations with Sorsogon in the Bicol Region.
