Meaning and formation
Fernandez means “son of Fernando”. It is the unaccented form of Spanish Fernández, which combines the personal name Fernando with the patronymic ending -ez. The Spanish form has an accent on á; Philippine families commonly use Fernandez without it. The surname passed from Spanish into Tagalog. Philippine bearers include Ramon Fernandez, a professional basketball player who won four PBA Most Valuable Player awards, and the actor Rudy Fernandez. Ramon also represented the Philippines in international basketball and later served as a commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission.
