Origin and formation
Garcia is the unaccented form of Spanish García. Its deeper origin is debated, with possible Basque connections to hartz, “bear”, or gazte, “young”. The Spanish surname was borrowed into both Tagalog and Cebuano. In the Philippine family of Carlos Polestico Garcia, Garcia was his paternal surname, inherited from his father Policronio Garcia; Polestico came from his mother Ambrosia. Carlos served as Philippine president from 1957 to 1961. The province of Bohol, where he was born, also has a municipality named President Carlos P. Garcia in his honour.
