Meaning and formation
Gatchalian is traditionally explained as Gat, “Lord”, with sa and Li-han, an old name of Malolos. The phrase is associated with the title of a legendary ruler of Ma-i, a precolonial state. The Philippine surname preserves an older Spanish-influenced spelling of that Tagalog phrase. A family bearing the surname is associated with Valenzuela City. Sherwin Gatchalian served as mayor of Valenzuela and later as a senator. His brother Rex also served as mayor before becoming secretary of social welfare and development, while their brother Wes entered local public office.
